Talking the new DCU flick of Injustice. Based of the fighting game and comic book of similar name. But this take on the whole bad Superman story, that almost seems a bit over done by this point, is surprisingly fresh, action packed, and filled with some good ole twists and turns in the story choices. Making it a very high bar DCU animated film to indulge in. Filled to the brim with all kinds of Justice League characters to boot beyond just the standard members of Batman, Wonder Woman, Supes, and so on. What's not to love?

We are finishing off the Rebuild Series of the Evangelion movies with the 4th part. 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time to really throw a curveball of confusion at people with that title. But we have beyond a good time talking about the flick, having laughs, go in depth, and adding in some what ifs. Like a Harvey Keitel crossover. But this film really does wrap the series up nicely, even if it does open a few new questions.

Talking all about the Evangelion movie of 1.11 or 1.0, You Are (Not) Alone. Confusing title, great flick. The sorta new reboot, series of films in the Evangelion line, coming out in Japan in 2007 and USA in 2009. But we start off with the first of four and have a good ole time in this anime world. The great action, funny laughs, interesting story turns, and well defined roster of characters. It's a classic with a fresh coat of paint and all the bells n' whistles. Will Shinji and his dad ever get to play baseball in the backyard? Only one way to find out.

We are talking the latest DCU live action picture today on the show with, The Suicide Squad. The Sequel to the first Suicide Squad though technically the 3rd in line with the Harley Quinn Birds of Prey flick. But in Suicide Squad 2 we get a fun filled exploitive action movie romp, that start's off a little strange but works it's way into a pretty darn good flick. Yeah it's kinda James Gunn doing an R Rated Guardians of the Galaxy style with some goofy jokes but backed up with fantastic action and copious amounts of the ultra violence. Hopefully taking us into another great era of brutal action in the rated R section of cinema films.

We are reviewing/discussing the brand new Quentin Tarantino book of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood on the show. A fantastic read for anyone who is a hardcore Tarantino and classic cinema fan. If you are not into Quentin as much, this book is really as extreme as it gets in his style and wording. But we loved it! It's like having an ultra extended/unrated cut of the film. And the novel nicely takes it's own route through the tales without just repeating exactly the films core story with just some longer scenes.
With all sorts of backstory into both Cliff (Brad Pitt) and Rick (Leonardo DiCaprio) that's beyond awesome. Plus cinema deep cut history and 60s pop culture insights too. This version just feels grimier, grungier, and far more brutal. Cliff's whole origin stories are just way past cool, really one of the greatest characters ever made. It just adds so much extra depth to the universe of the film.

We go back to the 60s with 2 totally amazing action flicks. Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo that is a samurai flick inspired by western movies and then Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars starring a younger Clint Eastwood. The film that is a spaghetti western remake of Yojimbo. We compare the similarities and differences of each of the films, the great action scenes in both, along with comedic good times, and even the other films out there that have used this format. Nothing but the best here!

We are talking all about the latest DCU animated movie of Batman The Long Halloween Part 1. These films seem to be getting cranked out with it only being like a month since Justice Society WW2 coming out. And just about another month till Part 2 of TLH returns. So, at least we won't have to wait too long. But getting back to the flick, based on the classic Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale book about a Holiday Killer making a mark on the crime families of Gotham. Leading into a culture clash of the old school mobsters and the new super villains moving in.
This is one of those great gateway comics for anyone looking to start getting deeper into the Batman universe. The movie holds up well to the book too, though since it's part 1 it's more of the setup piece. But great nonetheless. With it's own twists, turns, and style to separate it from the original. We will be looking forward to who the Holiday Killer ends up being in the next installment.

We have probably talked more good times about the Super Mario Bros 1993 flick than any other podcast around. And just out of the blue, like a Christmas miracle, comes a Extended Rough cut of around 20 extra minutes put back together in the film of deleted scenes, alternate takes, and parts that were from the shooting script. Edited back together by Garrett Gilchrist and put out by the SMB Archive fellows of Ryan Hoss and Steven Applebaum. We had the SMB Archive guys on the podcast a while back to talk all about the research into the Mario movie history. This version is something very special for any Bob Hoskins Mario and John Leguizamo Luigi movie fans out there.
We are also joined on the review with fellow podcaster Wes Younger from good ole Via VHS, pretty much the alternative podcast of Old Man Orange, talking all sorts of fun in the classic world of motion pictures. There's also a Mario Bros movie podcast coming out soon on Via VHS romanticizing the classic. On our big 500th episode we decided to go back in time with the 1st draft script of The Last Action Hero. on one of our Unproduced Scripts segments. Unproduced as in, the version before Arnold Schwarzenegger was even attached. This script came out in 1991 by Zak Pakk and Adam Leff also before Shane Black came in to put his groove on the storyline. Now we love the Arnie 1993 take we got best but this original draft is a very interesting, alternative take on the whole concept. Which to me, Last Action Hero has the best concept of any story out there. I mean, who would not want to go into their favorite movie, tv show, cartoon, video game, and so on now?
This script keeps the core concept of Danny getting sucked into an action flick but beyond that it starts going in different paths, with alternate type characters, locations, and leading into a completely different 3rd act where the story goes almost twilight zone like. Plus there's material in here that would be tough for any studio to get behind and not feel a responsibility problem in the near future. Playing out almost like it was a PG-13 Roger Corman or Tromaville film. Very interesting stuff here.

Last Action Hero was a action flick way ahead of it's time, easily lost over by Jurassic Park at the time but finding it's audience in the Danny aged target demographic. And funny enough, nowadays you see knock offs of this style. Other great flicks like Forbidden Kingdom, Ready Player One and even Tropic Thunder. And LAH is never a bad concept to knock off now too.

We are talking all about the brand new DCU animated feature of Justice Society World War 2 on the podcast. This film is fantastic and may be top 10 material of all the DCU pictures released. Multiple twists and turns that took us by surprise, action packed, a fantastic roster of characters, and brings back the good ole Superman quote of "Truth, Justice and the American Way!"
Beyond just the amazing war film, that shifts gears at each new act keeping the whole pace fresh and alive. We also get another amazing DCU short of Kamandi - The Last Boy on Earth. Beyond awesome and just adds to the value of owning the physical copy of the movie. And to top it all off we get the sneak peak at the next film, Batman The Long Halloween Part 1. One of those comic book stories that we have been looking forward to seeing in animated form since the early days of these DCU pictures.

We are talking all about the new Mortal Kombat flick of 2021 that has debuted on HBO Max and if you happen to live somewhere outside of California you might be able to see it in cinemas too. The movie's fun and action packed with good violence and multitude of characters from the game. But it oddly takes a 2000's movie feeling, with an Xmen like vibe, that somewhat grounded in reality format, and muted colors scheme. Plus then you get the oddball choice of the audience avatar character Cole and his family lifestyle which must be there to appease mom and pop in Oklahoma to make all the gory moments ok we guess. Bizarre as it is, it is still worth the watch and will hopefully be the start to bringing martial arts movies back into American cinemas.

After many years we finally get the Zack Snyder alternative directors cut of Justice League and boy is it something special. We already really enjoyed the original cut of the DC gang and it has it's merits still but this new take adding in the extended scenes and extra bells in whistles does make for a more complete and epic experience. Hopefully this reignites the course of these DC movies even if it's just for one last hurrah with a Justice League 2 because it is set up perfectly for a nice trilogy of Batman V Superman to JL2 or whatever it would end up being called.
So make sure to do your part and watch the flick and bring that extra support over to convince them Warner Bros to give ole Zack the free reign of Francis Ford Coppola in Godfather 2. Now we just need that nice Blu Ray set of the ZS JL to really experience the full glory here.
